The connection between mental health and hair loss in women

Woman with hands in head

Imagine this: You’re standing in front of the mirror studying your hairline, and you start realising your hair just isn’t what it used to be. Where are those long, luscious locks you once had? The glossy mane everyone used to compliment. Now, what’s left is bald patches, and you can see your scalp clearly through what’s left of your hair. You might even find yourself searching online for hairstyles for thinning hair or the best hair loss treatment you can get your hands on.

At Beauty in All, we completely understand just how devastating hair loss can be for a woman. It affects your confidence, the way you carry yourself, and – perhaps most importantly – it affects your mental health.

Trust us when we say we’ve been there, and we know how hard it is to experience hair loss or hair thinning. But, one thing we can tell you for sure is that there is hope! There are ways you can improve the condition of your hair and see results without using harsh chemicals or taking medication. We’ll tell you more about this a bit later. But for now, let’s look at the connection between mental health and hair loss in women.

What causes hair loss in women?

There are many causes of hair loss and hair thinning in women. Something as simple as how you style your hair can affect how you lose hair. It can also come down to more complicated problems.

One thing we all know as women is the havoc our hormones can cause in our bodies. Interestingly, hormones are one of the most common causes of hair loss in women. Hormonal changes of any kind - whether it be due to puberty, pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, thyroid issues, or Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) - can cause your hair to fall out faster than it grows. In addition, there’s a hormone called Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which causes hair loss. DHT gets in the way of your hair's growth cycle and shrinks or shortens your hair making it easier to fall out and harder for it to grow.

Certain medications and supplements can also cause hair loss in women, particularly medicines used for arthritis, depression, heart problems, high blood pressure, gout and even cancer.

Stress is a major contributing factor to hair loss. Highly stressful events can push your hair follicles into a resting phase so that they don’t produce new strands. As a result, hair loss will usually happen several months after the stressful event.

There are medical conditions that cause hair loss, such as alopecia areata, an immune system disorder that causes patchy hair loss and even scalp infections. Another condition that could be to blame is called trichotillomania which is a hair-pulling disorder.

Hair loss can also be caused by nutritional deficiencies like iron deficiency anemia or if your body doesn’t get enough vitamin D.

And finally, losing hair could come down to your genetics. If hair loss is hereditary (meaning it runs in your family), you may experience what is called androgenic alopecia which results in hair thinning along the crown and hair thinning all over.

Wow! That’s a lot to take in, we know. Especially if you aren’t sure which of these causes relates to your situation. But keep reading; we still have some good news coming soon.

The impact hair loss has on women’s mental health

According to a recent study, about 21 million women are affected by hair loss each year. In fact, 50% of women will experience some form of hair loss within their lifetime. Another study reports that, by the age of 40, around 40% of women will have suffered from hair loss.

However, as common as hair loss may be, it’s certainly not something that’s easy to deal with.

Research suggests that the experience of hair loss or hair thinning at any point in a women’s life can be psychologically damaging. It can cause emotional distress, often resulting in personal, social, and work-related issues. A significant reason why women are so deeply affected by hair loss is that, for most of our lives, we’ve been told by societal norms that our hair defines our beauty and who we are. The socio-cultural importance of hair has always been significant throughout history.

It has been proven that hair loss can lead to depression, anxiety, social phobia, and even paranoid disorders. It’s also been found that 29% of women who experience hair loss have reported at least two key symptoms of depression.

The effect of hair loss on women’s mental health is so significant that an entirely new field of medicine called psychodermatology has emerged. This discipline focuses on treating both the medical and psychological impact of hair loss and hair thinning.

So, if hair loss is getting you down, it’s perfectly normal to feel this way. While it’s not always helpful to tell women that their experience is similar to others, it may help to know that you are not alone in what you are feeling.

What can be done about hair loss?

There’s a lot of debate going on out there about what can be done with regard to hair loss in women. From including more protein in your diet to taking hair loss medicine in the form of a tablet, there are many treatments for hair loss that have some evidence of success.

However, what can be done about hair loss would depend largely on what’s causing it. If you’re losing your hair due to a hormonal imbalance created by your thyroid, you may find that taking thyroid medication improves the condition of your hair. If you are experiencing alopecia, your options for treatment are completely different.

Some hair loss can be reversed, and some can’t. So it really comes down to the cause and who you seek treatment from, whether that be your local GP or a specialised dermatologist.

What you should know about hair loss treatments

There are plenty of hair loss treatments for women on the market. From shampoos to scalp treatments and everything else in between, it can be difficult to know what to choose.

What you need to know about hair loss treatments is that many of them aren’t backed by science or have any form of evidence that they work. Before and after pictures aren’t enough to prove that a treatment will work for you.

It’s also worth noting that taking medication such as Minoxidil can cause all kinds of side effects and might not even result in much hair growth.

Sometimes, the chemicals used in hair loss treatments are harsh and can do more damage than good.

If you’re on the lookout for an effective hair loss treatment, it’s essential that you check out what scientific evidence there is to support that the product actually works and that it’s safe to use.
