7 tips for healthier, glossy hair

If you’re struggling to get your hair to look the way you want it to, there are some simple things you can try to get your hair looking healthy and glossy. From making small adjustments to your diet to protecting your hair while you swim, we’ve put together some top tips for taking better care of your hair.

Make sure you’re eating enough protein

Ever heard the saying, you are what you eat? It’s true. Because your hair is primarily made of protein, getting enough of it in your diet is essential for healthy hair.

Protein sources such as dairy, beans, eggs, lean meat, and fish are excellent foods to boost hair growth and shine. Other powerful foods for healthy hair include leafy greens, berries, and avocado. Blend all three together for a healthy hair smoothie. Yum!

Speak to your doctor about nutritional deficiencies

One thing that can really affect the quality of your hair, and contribute to hair loss, is a nutritional deficiency. Conditions such as iron deficiency (one of the leading causes of hair loss in women), anaemia, zinc deficiency, or even a vitamin D deficiency could be the reason your hair lacks the lustre you wish it had. Ask your doctor to test for nutritional deficiencies so that you can start taking the necessary supplements or medications and eating nutrient-dense food to get you on the path to healthier hair.

Protect your hair when swimming

As lovely as a revitalising dip in the pool can be, it can wreak havoc on your hair. The chlorine found in swimming pools can really damage your hair and suck the moisture right out of it. You can protect your hair by applying oil to your hair before you swim or by wearing a swim cap. Also, be sure to condition your hair shortly after swimming to replace any lost moisture.

Brush your hair before showering

If you have thick curls, this may sound ridiculous, but regardless of the texture of your hair, you should brush it before you wash it. When your hair is wet, it becomes far more susceptible to breakage. If you’re combing your hair in the shower and you yank on a knot, you’re going to break your hair (and it’ll hurt!) To avoid damage, brush your hair when it’s dry.

Start oiling your hair

Hair oiling is currently trending on social media, and for good reason! With the right ingredients, oiling your hair is a powerful way to nourish and protect your hair as well as prevent hair loss and boost growth. Our Super Roots Hair Growth Elixir is a specially formulated oil to fight hair loss, improve shine, reduce shedding, and help with thicker hair. Thicker, shinier hair? Sign us up!

Try derma rolling

Derma rolling or micro needling is using a handheld device with small needles on your scalp. In addition to being used as an anti-ageing skin treatment, some studies have found that derma rolling on the scalp can help with hair loss, restore shine, and regenerate the health of your hair. If you’re looking for a collagen-boosting derma roller that is high-quality and safe to use, try our 1.5mm derma roller for healthier hair.

Take care of your scalp

It’s important to remember that your scalp plays a big role in the condition of your hair. After all, the follicles that your hair grows from are in your scalp. Other than oiling and derma rolling your scalp, be sure to concentrate on massaging both your shampoo and your conditioner into your scalp when you wash your hair. You’ll also want to take a look at the shampoo you’re using - try a sulfate-free or chemical free option. Your scalp is quite a sensitive area (it’s skin after all), try to avoid using harsh chemicals like bleach directly on your scalp. You can even use a scalp scrub to boost scalp health too.
