The benefits of dermarolling for hair growth
When our founder, Imane, experienced hair loss at an early age, she tried all kinds of remedies and recipes in an attempt to restore her hair - after all, hair loss can be really hard to deal with. After plenty of trial and error, she found the perfect solution to fight hair loss and grow healthier hair: dermarolling.
What is a dermaroller?
To better understand how using a dermaroller for hair helps with growth, it’s best that we first tell you a bit more about dermarollers.
A dermaroller is a handheld device that consists of a cylindrical roller made of microneedles that are usually between 0.2mm and 1.5mm in length, but some can be as long as 3mm. Originally designed by dermatologists to heal acne scars, the rest of the product consists of an ergonomic handle which helps you hold and control the roller.
How does dermarolling work?
The micro needles on the roller gently prick your scalp, causing micro-injuries that stimulate blood flow and promote collagen and elastin in the scalp. When used in conjunction with a hair growth oil, a dermaroller makes it easier for the product to reach and absorb into your hair follicles. This helps your hair to thicken and grow.
The micro-injuries that the needles cause doesn’t damage the skin on your scalp, and they heal quickly, which is when collagen is produced. When your hair is in the process of growing, collagen thickens your hair root and supports the growth of new hairs.
If you have skin conditions like psoriasis, eczema, a history of blood clots, or if you’re pregnant, it’s best to consult your healthcare provider before using a derma roller on your scalp.
The benefits of a dermaroller for hair
We’ve mentioned before that Minoxidil is a popular medication that is prescribed to people experiencing various conditions that lead to hair loss. Unfortunately, many people who use Minoxidil experience unpleasant side effects.
Studies have found that the use of a dermaroller on the scalp can be more effective in promoting hair growth than Minoxidil. By boosting cell regeneration, dermarolling creates a healthier environment for strong hair to grow, preventing hair loss and breakage. Dermarollers are also affordable and can be used with ease at home.
If you’re shopping for a new dermaroller, keep in mind that research has shown that a 1.5mm dermaroller is best for hair growth.
How to use a dermaroller for hair growth
Start out by sectioning out dry, clean hair so you can reach any areas where you’re specifically experiencing hair loss. Next, slowly roll the device 10 times up, down, side to side, and diagonally. The idea is to move on to the next section once you’ve had redness and pinpoint bleeding. Once you’re done, you can apply more hair oil to your scalp about 24 hours after dermarolling.
Bonus tip: We recommend exfoliating your scalp a few days before dermarolling as this creates the best environment for hair growth.
In terms of pressure, you’d want to apply pretty much the same amount as you would if you were painting. Ideally, you’d want to go in the full 1.5mm of the needles. You should feel minor pricking or tingling, but you shouldn’t experience any pain.
How to look after your dermaroller and prevent infection
It’s important to keep your dermaroller clean and sanitised to avoid infection and injuries. After each use, rinse your dermaroller in warm soapy water and then apply a disinfectant like rubbing alcohol and allow it to dry properly.
Be sure to store your dermaroller carefully, as bent needles can cause significant injury to your scalp. If you drop the dermaroller or it becomes damaged, it’s time to get a new one, and it’s a good idea to replace your dermaroller every two months.
