What’s the fuss about rosemary essential oil for hair growth?
Rosemary essential oil is #trending! If you’ve looked at anything hair-related on Instagram or TikTok lately, you’ve probably come across rosemary essential oil as a remedy for hair loss and a stimulant for thicker, healthier hair. In fact, you’ve probably found influencers claiming that rosemary essential oil has restored their damaged hair, combatted hair loss, reduced split ends, and helped them grow a full head of beautiful hair.
However, in an online world where skin-erasing green facemasks are just as hyped up as oil for hair loss, it’s difficult to know if rosemary essential oil is the real deal. So, is it true that rosemary essential oil is great for hair growth? Keep reading to find out.
The origins of rosemary essential oil
Before we talk science, let’s take a look at the history behind rosemary essential oil.
You probably know that rosemary itself is used as a herb for cooking as well as for healing. The rosemary plant originates from the Mediterranean region and has been used there for food, medicine, and in many cultures, as a hair rinse for centuries.
Rosemary is often found in essential oil form. Essential oils are plant extracts that are distilled into a highly concentrated form. These oils are used for their medicinal properties, aromatherapy, and even cooking and cleaning.
The benefits of rosemary essential oil
Rosemary essential oil has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It’s also known to promote nerve growth and improve circulation. It strengthens circulation, prevents premature greying, and can help to treat dandruff. Now doesn’t that sound like an oil that packs a punch?!
It’s believed that rosemary essential oil can help promote hair growth, particularly because it can prevent hair follicles from being starved of blood supply and dying off, which contributes to hair loss. It’s also been said to be great for treating an itchy scalp, which often accompanies various hair loss conditions.
Does it work?
At Beauty in All, we believe in examining the science behind ingredients before we include them in our products. After all, we wouldn’t want to sell you anything that isn’t backed by research. We’ve dug deep into various clinical trials to determine if rosemary essential oil really is worth the hype and we’d like to share our findings with you.
First, in a 2015 trial, rosemary oil was tested against Minoxidil, a common hair loss drug often prescribed by doctors. The results showed that rosemary oil was just as effective as Minoxidil when treating male and female pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia. Not only did participants see a reduction in hair loss and a significant increase in hair count, but they also experienced less itching of the scalp, a common side effect of Minoxidil.
Moreover, a study from 2010 found that rosemary essential oil promotes hair growth, especially for those who have lost their hair because of alopecia. Another study from 2011 conducted on mice not only proved that rosemary leaf extract works as a restorative for hair, but also that it has circulation-improving effects on the scalp. It showed that the rosemary leaf extract stimulated hair growth, particularly when triggered by testosterone in male pattern baldness.
Lastly, a 2013 study conducted on mice found that rosemary oil was highly effective in preventing a hormonal condition caused by dihydrotestosterone (DHT) from prompting hair loss by binding to hormone receptors that attack our hair follicles.
We’re not only of the opinion that rosemary oil is fantastic for hair growth, restoration, and preventing hair loss, but we’re also convinced by the science that shows it works. In fact, we’re such big believers in rosemary essential oil that we’ve included it as an ingredient in our Super Roots Hair Growth Elixir.
